Lake Forest jumped out to a 20-0 first-quarter lead and rolled to a 40-7 victory over host Mundelein on Oct. 14.
The win improved Lake Forest’s overall record to 5-3 to make the Scouts playoff eligible.
Using a balanced attack, the Scouts finished the game with 465 yards. The host Mustangs were limited to 130 yards.
LF junior Bryan Ooms rushed for 61 yards on four carries and had touchdown runs of 15 and 31 yards in the second quarter.
Liam Pooler also ran for 61 yards. The senior put LF ahead 6-0 with a 31-yard TD run in the opening frame.
Quarterback Charlie Reinkemeyer had a productive outing. He completed 5 of 10 passes for 158 yards, while he added 58 rushing yards.
Reinkemeyer threw a 21-yard TD pass to Reed Thomas in the second quarter, while he scored on a 27-yard in the first quarter.
Thomas (3 catches, 68 yards) and sophomore Ryan Cekay (4-83) were the team’s leading pass catchers. Pooler also had a 27-yard reception.
LF’s other TD was scored by Andrew Athenson, on a 24-yard run in the first quarter.
On the defensive end, the Scouts were led by Athenson (6 tackles, 1 tackle-for-loss), John Deering (11 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL), Cal Wonham (5 solo tackles, 1 sack, 3 TFLs), Chris Cavalaris (6 tackles), Alex Svigos (4 tackles, 1 TFL), Spencer Yauch (2 tackles, 1 TFL) and Ed Mordini (interception, fumble recovery).
Vernon Hills 26, Glenbrook North 25
Visiting Vernon Hills rallied to beat Glenbrook North 26-25 on Oct. 14.
It was the first loss of the season for the Spartans (7-1).
Vernon Hills (6-2) outscored GBN 20-8 in the final period.
Quarterback Kevin Burnside was good on 23 of 35 passes for 243 yards. He threw two TD passes to Tommy Gertner (14 catches, 162 yards) and one to TJ Weinzimmer (6-64).
Gertner also made a field goal and two PATs.
Alex Bubaris caught two passes for 32 yards, while Jimmy Karfis had three receptions for 15 yards.
Karfis (13 carries, 65 yards) and Burnside (17-61) led GBN’s ground game.
Gerry Luc was the leading tackler for the Spartans (8 solos, 3 assists). The other defensive leaders included Matt Pawlowski (8 tackles, 1 tackle-for-loss), Luke Kincaid (8 tackles, 1 TFL), Gio Kollias (6 tackles), Brennan Hughes (5 tackles, 1 TFL) and James Mercoulis (4 tackles). Pawlowski also blocked a kick, while Cole Marrinan recovered a fumble and Luke Amen had an interception.
