Week 8: Loyola raises record to 7-1

How about some applause for Rory Boos?

The Loyola Academy junior arguably had his best game of the season in his team’s 24-3 victory at Providence Catholic on Oct. 13.

The wideout sparked the Ramblers (7-1) with a pair of long touchdown catches in the second quarter. He caught a 52-yard pass from quarterback Quinn Boyle with 7:16 left in the first half. Then, a little over five minutes later, he turned a Quinn pass into a 66-yard score.

Boos finished the game with three catches for 149 yards.

Boyle ended up completing 13 of 23 passes for 255 yards.

Boyle’s third TD toss came with 1:56 left in the first half, when he found an open Noah Jones on a 10-yard strike.

Jones, a highly touted junior, missed the first seven games of the season with an injury.

The team’s other leading receiver was James Joyce (6 catches, 82 yards).

Boyle also wound up as the team’s leading rusher (8-41), while Hamid Bullie also contributed. The senior running back (8 carries, 27 yards) put the Ramblers ahead 6-0 on a one-yard run with 3:50 left in the opening period.

Lake Forest 35, Mundelein 28

— Lake Forest kept its state playoff hopes alive by downing visiting Mundelein 35-28 in North Suburban Conference action on Oct. 13.

The Scouts (4-4) jumped out to a 28-6 halftime lead.

Mundelein, which slipped to 2-6 overall, scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Jack Mislinski put up nice numbers for LF. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 184 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed the ball four times for 39 yards and two TDs.

John Deering caught a three-yard TD pass in the first quarter.

Bryan Ooms was the leading ground gainer for the Scouts. He carried the ball 10 times for 73 yards. He had two TD runs, including a 23-yarder in the third quarter. He also caught two passes for 22 yards.

LF’s other offensive stat leaders were Ryan Cekay (2 catches for 46 yards), Jacob Thomas (18 rushes, 20 yards; 3 catches, 31 yards), Breck Nowik (2 catches, 25 yards) and Ryan Marquis (1 catch, 40 yards).

Defensively, the Scouts were led by Deering (6 tackles), Will Wisniewski (7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss) and Rylie Mills (2 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL).

Deerfield 35, Glenbrook North 17

— Glenbrook North saw its record slide to 4-4 with a 35-17 setback at Deerfield on Oct. 13.

Chris Heywood and Davu Keels were the offensive leaders for GBN.

Heywood ran the ball 19 times for 100 yards. He also completed 7 of 10 passes for 83 yards.

Keels finished the game with 11 receptions for 158 yards and one touchdown.

Colin Paul had three catches for 20 yards and one TD.

GBN running back Jimmy Karfis tallied 54 rushing yards on 14 carries. He added three grabs for 51 yards.

Ben Foster also played QB for the Spartans. He completed 10 of 19 passes for 120 yards.

Andrew Pollina had a field goal and two PAT kicks.

On the defensive side, Skyler Metzger had a huge game for the Spartans. He had 11 tackles to go along with one sack and four other tackles for loss.

The other tackles leaders were Landon Abboud (8), Quinn Sybert (8), Ethan Quayle (7), Michael Weingardt (5) and Cam Casey (5). Abboud, Sybert and Quayle recorded TFLs, while Weingardt had a sack.

Maine West 28, Highland Park 16

— Highland Park had its four-game winning streak snapped on Oct. 13.

Visiting Maine West improved to 7-1 overall with a 28-16 win. The Warriors improved to 4-0 in the CSL North.

Highland Park (4-4, 3-1) had some big plays in the outing. Giancarlo Volpentesta had three catches, including a 60-yarder for a touchdown. Ryan Brincks had a 22-yard TD run and finished the game with 15 carries for 94 yards. And Noa Morgenstern came up with a quarterback sack and safety.

Noah Spitz of the Giants once again played well on both sides of the ball. He had two catches for 32 yards, while he also finished the game with six solo tackles and one pass breakup.

HP lineman Marcus Shaw had six tackles and a sack, while Tommy Motzko had five tackles and a sack. The other tackle leaders were Brincks (6) and Luke Baldwin (5).

Standout two-way lineman Jack Finfer went down with a knee injury on the first play of the game.
